Culinary Meets Code: Show Highlights

Metropolitan Farms representatives showcasing urban agriculture

Metropolitan Farms reps at The Good Food Festival: loud and proud about the urban agriculture movement!

It’s a rare and truly exciting occasion when my passion for culinary trends and home innovation converges in a single day. Recently, I had the unique opportunity to attend two influential expos back-to-back: The Good Food Festival and the International Home + Housewares Show. While seemingly disparate, these events share a profound common thread – a relentless pursuit of innovation coupled with a deep commitment to sustainable growth, environmental stewardship, and customer respect. This intertwining focus on progress and responsibility resonated deeply, reinforcing the encouraging truth that sustainability is not just a fleeting trend, but a foundational pillar of our future.

My day began at the UIC Forum, which annually hosts the vibrant Good Food Festival & Conference. This highly anticipated event serves as a pivotal gathering for visionaries within the local and sustainable food movement. From dedicated farmers and celebrated chefs to pioneering entrepreneurs and influential policymakers, the festival unites diverse stakeholders committed to transforming our food systems. This year, the festival welcomed an impressive turnout of over 7,500 visitors, marking a significant 54% increase from the previous year. This surge in attendance underscores a growing public appetite for understanding where our food comes from, how it’s produced, and its impact on our health and the planet. Food enthusiasts and curious newcomers alike immersed themselves in a rich program featuring interactive micro-workshops, inspiring celebrity chef demonstrations, and a bustling marketplace where they could discover and purchase products from more than 150 local farmers, artisanal food producers, and passionate retailers. It was a true celebration of community and conscious consumption, highlighting the profound positive impact of supporting local, sustainable food initiatives.

As a dedicated food blogger, staying abreast of the latest sustainable food trends is paramount, and the Good Food Festival certainly delivered. I was particularly captivated by the presence of the Knife & Tine restaurant staff, led by executive chef Paul Caravelli, who were enthusiastically promoting one of the country’s hottest culinary movements: the **blenditarian movement**. This innovative approach to cooking involves incorporating a significant portion of finely chopped mushrooms into ground meat when preparing dishes like burgers and meatballs. The movement isn’t just about a clever culinary trick; it represents a significant step towards more sustainable and healthier eating habits.

The benefits of embracing the blenditarian philosophy are multifaceted. Nutritionally, blending mushrooms with ground meat can significantly reduce the fat and calorie content of meals while boosting essential nutrients. Financially, it offers a budget-friendly way to extend costly meat, making healthy eating more accessible to a wider audience. More importantly, from an environmental perspective, the blenditarian movement offers a compelling solution to reduce our ecological footprint. According to the Blenditarian website, mushrooms are an incredibly sustainable crop. A remarkable one million pounds of mushrooms can be cultivated in just a single acre of land, requiring minimal water resources, and are ready for harvest in a matter of days. This makes them one of the most earth-friendly and renewable food sources available, contributing to a lower carbon footprint and more efficient resource utilization in food production. My family and I were completely enamored with the blenditarian meatballs we sampled. It’s truly remarkable how such a small recipe modification can lead to such a big step in the right direction, both in terms of enhancing flavor and advancing global sustainability efforts.

The festival was also an excellent opportunity to reconnect with the dedicated team from I Heart Keenwah, who were showcasing their two exciting new toasted quinoa hot cereal varieties. Quinoa, a nutritional powerhouse, has become a staple for many health-conscious consumers, and I Heart Keenwah has consistently delivered high-quality, innovative products. My mother and I were particularly impressed by the wholesome taste and wonderfully creamy texture of their new toasted quinoa offerings. These cereals provide a perfect blend of comfort and nutrition, making them an ideal start to any day, packed with protein and fiber to sustain energy levels. It’s exciting to see brands like I Heart Keenwah continuing to innovate in the healthy breakfast category, offering delicious and convenient options for busy individuals and families.

Another culinary highlight deserving a special mention was the exquisite range of preserves sampled at the Joe’s Blues Blueberries stand. Their commitment to quality and natural ingredients shone through in every spoonful. The low-sugar blueberry preserve, sweetened delicately with honey, stood out as my absolute favorite. Its natural sweetness and vibrant fruit flavor made it incredibly versatile – perfect for enhancing freshly made crêpes, drizzling over fluffy pancakes, or simply enjoying with toast. It was a testament to the fact that wholesome ingredients, thoughtfully prepared, can create truly exceptional flavors.

As expected, the burgeoning **urban agriculture movement** was robustly represented at the festival, reflecting its growing importance in our cities. Among the many commendable organizations, I had the pleasure of interacting with The Urban Canopy. Founded in 2011, this remarkable organization is dedicated to cultivating food locally and sustainably within urban environments. Their comprehensive projects include managing an advanced indoor growing space, operating a two-acre farm in the Englewood neighborhood, and providing invaluable support to adjacent community and school gardens. The Urban Canopy exemplifies how urban farming can not only provide fresh, healthy produce to city dwellers but also foster community engagement, educational opportunities, and a greener urban landscape. Their work is vital in building resilient local food systems and connecting urban communities with the source of their food, reducing food miles and promoting environmental awareness.

Energized by the insightful discussions and networking opportunities at the Good Food Festival, I transitioned from the UIC Forum to McCormick Place for the latter half of my day at the globally renowned International Home + Housewares Show. This colossal event featured more than 2,200 exhibitors and welcomed over 62,000 attendees from 125 countries, truly showcasing the global landscape of home innovation. This year’s show placed a significant emphasis on the exciting future of **smart and connected products**. According to leading housewares trend experts, digital connectivity is rapidly integrating into virtually every facet of our homes. From intelligent light bulbs that adapt to our routines and coffee brewers that can be programmed remotely, to smart thermostats optimizing energy use and ovens that communicate with our phones – connected products, once a futuristic dream, are now swiftly becoming an integral part of everyday reality. Moreover, smart products are making a profound impact on convenience and efficiency. Technologies ranging from autonomous vacuuming robots to smart trash cans equipped with intelligent sensors are fundamentally transforming how we live within and interact with our homes, creating more intuitive, efficient, and comfortable living spaces.

A particularly captivating highlight of the show was the appearance of Millennia, the social robot. Millennia demonstrated an impressive range of social skills, excelling at engaging and interacting with the audience, prompting considerable thought about the future of automation in domestic settings. Could this advanced robot truly be the “kitchen helper” of the future, seamlessly integrating into our daily routines, assisting with tasks, and even providing companionship? The implications of such intelligent, socially adept robots entering our homes are vast, raising fascinating questions about convenience, efficiency, and the evolving nature of human-technology interaction. It certainly provided some serious food for thought regarding the future of housewares and domestic life.

This year, Hamilton Beach unveiled several exciting new appliances designed to simplify and enhance daily life. Among them was a cutting-edge programmable 12-cup coffee maker that caught my eye. This innovative machine boasts three distinct brew strength options, allowing users to customize their coffee precisely to their taste preferences. Another notable innovation from Hamilton Beach was their newly designed hand mixer, specifically engineered to minimize arm and wrist stress during use. As the satisfied owner of two previous Hamilton Beach hand mixers, I was particularly keen to test out this new ergonomic product on display at the Show and compare it with my current models at home. I am delighted to report that the new hand mixer delivers exceptionally on its promise of enhanced comfort and control. Its thoughtful design significantly reduces strain, making extended mixing tasks much more enjoyable. Beyond its ergonomic advantages, it performs its primary function with effortless efficiency. Using this mixer felt intuitive, easy, and genuinely fun, reinforcing Hamilton Beach’s reputation for practical, user-friendly kitchen appliances that truly enhance the cooking experience.

In terms of prevailing color trends, housewares experts at the show indicated a significant departure from traditional aesthetics, influenced partly by the evolving preferences of the Millennial generation. The current period is characterized by a deliberate and vibrant mix of different prints, patterns, and bold colors. Strong, impactful hues are particularly in vogue, including striking shades of pink (leaning towards magenta or fuchsia), fiery red, energetic orange, and cheerful yellow. Complementary combinations such as yellow and black, and dynamic blue and orange, are also highly trendy, reflecting a desire for self-expression and personality in home décor. These bold palettes are transforming kitchens and living spaces into more vibrant and personalized environments, moving away from muted tones towards a more adventurous and optimistic visual language.

Indeed, strong, expressive colors were ubiquitous at this year’s Housewares Show, truly reflecting the experts’ predictions. Leading brands like KitchenAid, FlatBox, and Melitta masterfully showcased this trend, integrating these lively hues into their product lines, from stand mixers and cookware to coffee machines and kitchen accessories. The result was an inspiring display of how color can infuse life and character into everyday household items.

As is customary, the Housewares Show was enlivened by numerous celebrity chef appearances, adding an extra layer of excitement and practical demonstration to the event. These chefs not only drew large crowds but also provided valuable insights into product usage and culinary techniques. Here’s a snapshot I captured of Chef Jeff Mauro, engaging the audience with a captivating cooking demonstration at the Spectrum Brands booth. His presence underscored how these events serve as dynamic platforms where innovation in kitchen technology meets expert culinary artistry, inspiring attendees to experiment and elevate their home cooking.

This year’s combined experience at the Good Food Festival and the International Home + Housewares Show was exceptionally enriching, offering a comprehensive glimpse into the evolving landscapes of sustainable food and smart home technology. I learned an immense amount, from the practical applications of the blenditarian movement and the critical importance of urban agriculture to the transformative potential of connected products and ergonomic design in our kitchens. I am already eagerly anticipating the next editions in 2018, keen to discover new trends, groundbreaking concepts, and inspiring stories that will continue to shape how we eat and live. By this time next year, we will undoubtedly have a clearer picture of the blenditarian movement’s widespread success and, hopefully, gain further insights into the expanding role of social robots in our daily domestic lives. The future promises boundless innovation and exciting possibilities. Who knows what wonders await us? I, for one, cannot wait to find out!
