Readers of Chicago Loves Panini may recall my enthusiastic collaboration with Ann Clark last spring, an experience I thoroughly enjoyed and documented in my previous post here. Recently, I was delighted to receive another thoughtful package from Ann Clark, brimming with their high-quality products. This package also included their indispensable pocket-sized recipe booklet, which notably features one of my all-time favorite sugar cookie recipes. This recipe is a true gem, celebrated for its perfect balance of flavor and its ability to hold intricate shapes beautifully, making it ideal for use with Ann Clark’s diverse range of cookie cutters.

Inspired by the season of love and the exquisite tools at hand, I enthusiastically utilized Ann Clark’s cherished sugar cookie recipe in conjunction with the limited-edition Pair of Hearts cookie cutter from the Vault Collection. The result was a batch of truly delightful treats, perfectly shaped and ready for decoration. To add a touch of elegance and a burst of natural fruit flavor, I adorned these heart-shaped cookies with a generous dusting of powdered freeze-dried raspberries. This simple yet sophisticated decoration not only enhanced their visual appeal but also contributed a lovely tartness that beautifully complemented the sweetness of the sugar cookies, creating an unforgettable sensory experience.

During my recent exploration of Ann Clark’s innovative product line, I was particularly thrilled to discover their Premium Strawberry Meringue Powder. This gourmet product is a game-changer for any baker, offering the irresistible flavor of real strawberries in a convenient powdered format. It simplifies the meringue-making process, allowing for quick and effortless preparation, and its spectacular aroma fills the kitchen with a sweet, fruity scent that is truly intoxicating. Beyond traditional meringues, this versatile powder can elevate frostings, glazes, and even beverages with its vibrant strawberry essence. I personally adore pairing these beautifully decorated heart cookies with a freshly made sour cherry sauce, creating a delightful contrast of sweet and tart flavors that makes for an exquisite dessert experience.

To provide a deeper insight into the heart and soul of Ann Clark Cookie Cutters and the exciting new Vault Collection, I had the immense pleasure of conducting an exclusive interview with Ben Clark, Ann Clark’s son and the current CEO of the company. His candid responses shed light on the brand’s philosophy, its dedication to the baking community, and the thoughtful process behind their beloved products. I am delighted to share this insightful conversation below:

  • The Vault Collection was launched “to honor the designs that have shaped Ann Clark’s journey.” Could you please tell us more about this collection? How did the idea come about?

The inspiration for the Vault Collection emerged organically during one of our regular brainstorming sessions focused on developing new and exciting cookie cutter shapes. While we always have a pipeline of innovative designs on the horizon, one of our brilliant marketing team members suggested that we also take a moment to look back. They proposed revisiting some of our retired shapes from years past, with the goal of not just reintroducing them, but truly rediscovering some forgotten favorites that our loyal customers might remember and cherish. This idea immediately resonated with the entire team, as it allowed us to celebrate our rich history and connect with our customers on a nostalgic level, while also offering something fresh and unique. It’s a wonderful way to honor the legacy of Ann Clark and the designs that have contributed to our 35-year journey in the baking world.

  • How did you decide on the list of shapes to include in the Vault Collection? Did Mrs. Ann Clark participate in the decision-making process?

The selection process for the Vault Collection shapes was a thoughtful one, guided by a couple of key factors to ensure each release would be both popular and practical for our bakers. Firstly, we wanted shapes that were perfectly timed with the seasons and upcoming holidays. For instance, the Pair of Hearts was an obvious choice to kick off the collection just before Valentine’s Day, providing bakers with the ideal tool for their romantic creations. This seasonal alignment helps our customers create themed treats that are relevant and exciting throughout the year.

Secondly, and perhaps most crucially, we prioritized shapes that are genuinely a joy to bake and create with. Over our 35 years in the cookie cutter business, we’ve gathered invaluable insights into what makes a great design. In our early days, some shapes, while visually appealing, proved challenging for bakers. A classic example is our moose shape. It was a top-seller in gift shops due to its distinctive look, but it didn’t perform as well in kitchenware stores. After extensive conversations with professional cookie artists and avid home bakers, we quickly understood why: the thin legs of the moose design were prone to cooking faster and burning, or even breaking off when transferring the delicate cookies from the baking sheet to the cooling rack. This was a pivotal learning experience for us.

We internalized that feedback and, as a direct result, embarked on a significant effort to re-fabricate many of our dies based on the practical recommendations from the cookie decorating community. Going back through our “vault” for this collection was more than just a trip down memory lane; it was a fascinating review of all the design improvements and lessons we’ve learned over the decades. For the Vault Collection, we made sure to select only those shapes that we confidently knew bakers and cookie decorators could use with ease and enjoy decorating without frustration. While Ann herself was not directly involved in pinpointing each specific shape for the Vault Collection, she remains a vibrant and active presence in the office almost every day. She has enthusiastically shared in our excitement for these reissued shapes, embodying the spirit and passion that built Ann Clark Cookie Cutters.

  • Do you have a favorite Vault Collection shape? Why is it your favorite?

That’s truly a tough question to answer, as each shape in the Vault Collection holds its own unique charm and history, making it incredibly hard to pick just one favorite! However, I can say that there are a couple of shapes slated for release later this spring that I am particularly excited about. What makes these upcoming designs stand out to me is their ingenious construction: they offer a significant amount of blank space, providing an excellent canvas for individuals to write personalized messages. This feature opens up a world of creative possibilities for our cookie decorators. I’m really looking forward to seeing how the incredibly imaginative and talented individuals within our vibrant cookie decorating community utilize these shapes. I envision them being used for everything from personalized birthday wishes and celebratory greetings to heartfelt thank-you notes and even custom corporate branding. The potential for unique expression and connection through these cookies is immense, and that’s what makes them exceptionally exciting for me.
