This unwavering love for all things cookie is what constantly inspires me to create new and exciting variations that delight both young and old.

At the heart of many of our cookie creations lies my foundational recipe for the perfect soft sugar cookie. This signature recipe is celebrated for its incredible ease and consistent results. There’s no need for a messy rolling pin; these are thick, delightful drop cookies that effortlessly bake up beautifully every single time, maintaining their shape with minimal spread. They’re my go-to for special occasions and holidays, often packaged in charming cellophane bags, ready to share joy and sweetness. Driven by a craving for an even more indulgent cookie experience, I decided to playfully tinker with my tried-and-true sugar cookie recipe. My goal was to infuse it with an irresistible, unapologetic Oreo flavor, resulting in a cookie that truly stands out. The result? These gloriously big and thick sugar cookies that absolutely do not skimp on the Oreo goodness. Each cookie is generously studded with larger chunks of Oreos, alongside fine cookie crumbs, ensuring an explosion of chocolatey creaminess in every single bite. The textural interplay between the soft sugar cookie and the crunchy Oreo pieces is simply divine, making these delicious cookies practically beg for a refreshing glass of cold milk. They are, quite simply, made for dunking and savoring.

A curated display of ingredients including flour, sugar, Oreos, butter, shortening, and vanilla extract, ready for baking.
  • Salted Butter: Crucial for rich flavor and tenderness. If you only have unsalted butter, that’s perfectly fine; simply increase the amount of kosher salt in the recipe to ¾ teaspoon to balance the flavors. Ensure your butter is softened to room temperature for optimal creaming.
  • Shortening: This unsung hero is key to achieving that desirable “no spread” quality and contributes to a wonderfully tender crumb. My preferred brand is Crisco for consistent results.
  • Granulated Sugar: Provides sweetness and helps create those delightful crispy edges.
  • Large Egg: Acts as a binder, adding moisture and richness to the dough. Ensure it’s at room temperature.
  • Vanilla Extract: A touch of vanilla enhances all the other flavors, giving the cookies a warm, inviting aroma and taste. Use a good quality pure vanilla extract for the best results.
  • All-Purpose Flour: The primary structural component of our cookie dough. Accurately measure by spooning flour into your measuring cup and leveling off.
  • Baking Powder: Our leavening agent, responsible for the cookie’s lift and soft, airy texture.
  • Kosher Salt: Balances the sweetness and amplifies the overall flavor profile of the cookies.
  • Regular Oreo Cookies: The star of the show! We’re using whole regular Oreos, which will break into delightful chunks and crumbs during mixing. Feel free to experiment with flavored Oreos such as peanut butter, chocolate, mint, or even golden Oreos for a unique twist.

Recipe Crafting: A Visual Overview

Embark on your cookie-making journey by gathering these simple ingredients and your everyday kitchen tools. This section provides a helpful overview of the baking process, showcasing the key steps with accompanying images. For the full, detailed instructions, please refer to the comprehensive recipe card below.

Adding an egg to a creamy mixture of butter, shortening, and sugar in a stand mixer bowl, for Oreo sugar cookie batter.

1. Begin by creaming together the softened butter, shortening, and granulated sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer until the mixture is light, fluffy, and beautifully creamy. Then, beat in the large egg and the fragrant vanilla extract until fully incorporated. Remember to pause and scrape down the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula to ensure everything is thoroughly combined.

2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and kosher salt until evenly combined. With your mixer running on low speed, gradually add these dry ingredients to the wet mixture. Mix until the dough just comes together, ensuring not to overmix, as this can lead to tougher cookies.

3. Now for the star ingredient! Add the whole Oreo cookies directly to the sugar cookie dough in the mixer. Continue to mix on low speed just until the Oreos break into a delightful combination of large and small pieces, creating incredible texture throughout the dough.

4. Using a large cookie scoop or a ¼ cup measure, portion the dough into generously sized, uniform cookie dough balls. This ensures even baking and beautifully consistent cookies.

5. Carefully place the dough balls onto your prepared baking sheet, ensuring they are spaced approximately 2 inches apart to allow for proper airflow and slight expansion. Lightly press down on each dough ball with your fingers to flatten them slightly, which helps achieve those desirable crispy edges.

6. Bake the cookies in your preheated oven until they reach golden perfection. Once baked, immediately transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool completely. This crucial step prevents them from continuing to bake on the hot sheet and ensures optimal texture.

Baker’s Insight 1: For a cookie dough that comes together effortlessly and results in a perfectly smooth, uniform batter, ensure all your refrigerated ingredients – butter, shortening, and egg – are at room temperature before you begin mixing. This allows for better emulsification and a more consistent dough.

Baker’s Insight 2: While a stand mixer is ideal for this recipe, a sturdy hand mixer can also be used effectively. If you opt for a hand mixer, I recommend crushing the Oreos into smaller pieces *before* adding them to the dough, as a hand mixer may struggle to break down whole cookies.

Creative Variations to Make Them Yours

While these Oreo Sugar Cookies are spectacular on their own, feel free to get creative and customize them to your liking. Here are some delightful variations to make this recipe truly one of your favorites:

  • Infuse Extra Flavor: Elevate the aromatic profile of your cookies by replacing the vanilla extract with other enticing flavors. Consider peppermint extract for a festive holiday cookie, a touch of mint extract for a refreshing twist, or almond extract for a nutty, sophisticated undertone.
  • Add Fun Toppers: Once you’ve portioned your cookie dough balls, try dipping the tops into your favorite sprinkles before baking. Colorful rainbow sprinkles are perfect for celebrations, chocolate sprinkles add extra decadence, or festive themed sprinkles can match any holiday.
  • Boost with More Mix-ins: Along with the delightful Oreo pieces, you can mix in up to ½ cup of additional treats. Think classic semi-sweet chocolate chips, creamy white chocolate chips for a sweet contrast, or chopped pecans or almonds for an added layer of nutty crunch.
  • Experiment with Different Oreos: Don’t limit yourself to regular Oreos! The world of flavored Oreos offers endless possibilities. Try the rich flavor of chocolate Oreos, the refreshing zing of mint Oreos, the comforting taste of golden Oreos, or even seasonal varieties for a unique take.
  • Adjust the Cookie Size: This recipe typically calls for a large cookie scoop or ¼ cup measuring cup to portion the dough, creating generously sized cookies. For smaller, bite-sized treats perfect for sharing platters, use a medium cookie scoop to form golf ball-sized pieces of dough. Adjust baking time accordingly for smaller cookies, typically reducing it by a few minutes.

Storage Solutions for Maximum Freshness

To keep your delicious Oreo Sugar Cookies fresh and delightful for as long as possible, follow these simple storage guidelines, whether you plan to enjoy them within days or save them for later.

  • Room Temperature Storage: Once the cookies have completely cooled to room temperature, transfer them to an airtight container or a resealable bag. Stored this way, they will remain wonderfully fresh and delicious for up to 4 days. If I’m planning to serve them within a day or two, I often display them beautifully on a footed cake stand with a protective lid, both for presentation and freshness.
  • Freezer Storage: These cookies freeze beautifully! Allow the cookies to cool completely before arranging them in an airtight container or a heavy-duty freezer-safe resealable bag. To prevent sticking, you can place pieces of parchment paper between layers of cookies. They can be stored in the freezer for up to 3 months, ready to be thawed and enjoyed whenever a cookie craving strikes.
  • Freezing Cookie Dough: For ultimate convenience, you can also freeze the raw cookie dough. Prepare the dough according to the recipe, then portion it into balls. Place the dough balls on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet and freeze until solid. Once frozen, transfer the dough balls to a freezer-safe resealable gallon-sized bag. Freeze for up to 3 months. When ready to bake, place frozen dough balls on a prepared baking sheet, let them thaw at room temperature for 15-20 minutes, then bake as directed, potentially adding a minute or two to the baking time.

The Ultimate Expert Baking Tip for Perfect Cookies

The secret to achieving soft, chewy cookies that are neither hard nor crumbly lies in precise baking. Avoid the common pitfall of overbaking! For optimal results, bake your cookies just until the bottoms are a very light golden brown and the centers are barely set – they might still look slightly underdone in the middle. Crucially, the tops of the cookies should not show any signs of browning. As soon as they reach this stage, promptly remove them from the hot baking sheet and transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. The residual heat from the baking sheet will continue to bake them, and cooling on a rack immediately stops this process, ensuring that perfect tender texture.

Frequently Asked Questions About Baking Oreo Sugar Cookies

Can you freeze the cookie dough?

Absolutely, freezing cookie dough is a fantastic way to get a head start on your cookie baking and enjoy fresh cookies anytime! Prepare the cookie batter exactly as directed in the recipe. Once the dough is ready, portion it out into individual cookie balls using your scoop. Place these dough balls onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, ensuring they don’t touch. Transfer the entire baking sheet to the freezer until the cookie dough balls are completely solid. Once frozen, you can transfer the solid dough balls to a freezer-safe resealable gallon-sized bag or an airtight container. Frozen dough will keep well for up to 3 months.

How do you bake frozen cookie dough?

Baking frozen cookie dough is incredibly convenient. Simply remove as many cookie dough balls as you wish to bake from the freezer. Place them on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet, spaced about 2 inches apart. Allow the dough to thaw at room temperature for approximately 15-20 minutes while your oven preheats. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Bake the partially thawed cookies for 10-14 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden and the centers are just set. Keep an eye on them, as baking times can vary slightly.

Why did my cookies spread too much?

Excessive spreading can be due to several factors. Ensure your butter and shortening are at the correct softened (not melted) room temperature. Over-creaming butter and sugar can incorporate too much air, leading to collapse. The amount of flour is also critical; ensure you measure accurately, preferably by weight if possible, or by spooning flour into the measuring cup and leveling it off. Additionally, a hot baking sheet can cause spreading, so ensure your sheets are cool before adding dough, and avoid greasing the parchment paper.

Can I use only butter instead of butter and shortening?

While you can use all butter, the texture and spread of your cookies will change. Shortening contributes to a softer, more tender crumb and, crucially, helps prevent cookies from spreading too much, yielding those lovely thick sugar cookies. Using only butter might result in a flatter, crispier cookie, which is still delicious, but different from the intended “no spread” result of this recipe.

Ingredients

  • cup salted butter
  • cup shortening
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 12 regular Oreo cookies

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream the butter, shortening and sugar until light and creamy, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Add the egg and vanilla and beat until combined, about 1-2 minutes.
  • In a small bowl, add and whisk the flour, baking powder, and kosher salt.
  • With the mixer on low, gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. The dough should come together and be mixed in about 2-3 minutes. The dough will be thick.
  • With the mixer on low, add the whole Oreos a few at a time. The cookies should break into big and small pieces.
  • Using a large cookie scoop or ¼ cup measure, portion the dough into balls. Place on the prepared cookie sheet about 2 inches apart. Slightly flatten the dough with your fingers.
  • Bake for 10-14 minutes. The bottoms should be light brown and the centers barely set.
  • Remove the cookies from the oven. Place them on a wire cooling rack.
  • Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

So the cookie dough comes together easily and completely, all the ingredients should be at room temperature.
A hand mixer can be used to make the cookies. If one is used, crush the Oreos before adding them to the dough.
For soft cookies that aren’t hard and crumbly, bake them until the bottoms are just light brown and the centers are not quite set. The tops of the cookies shouldn’t be brown at all. Immediately remove them from the baking sheet to cool.
