There’s an undeniable magic to spring baking. As the world awakens with vibrant colors and fragrant blossoms, my kitchen, newly remodeled with gleaming appliances and a fresh, inspiring aesthetic, feels more inviting than ever. This season, my culinary adventures have taken an exciting turn thanks to a wonderful collaboration with Ann Clark, America’s premier cookie cutter manufacturer. Their commitment to quality and rich family history make them the perfect partner for crafting delightful homemade treats.

Ann Clark: A Legacy Forged in Steel and Creativity

The story of Ann Clark is as heartwarming as a freshly baked cookie. It began in 1989 when artist and baker Ann Clark, alongside her husband John, sought a venture that blended their entrepreneurial spirit with Ann’s creative talents. What started as crafting small handcrafted toys, dollhouses, and ornaments in a Vermont garage soon pivoted to a singular passion: metal cookie cutters. As their website eloquently puts it, “Armed with a small amount of cash and unbridled enthusiasm, Ann tackled her first trade show and sold out her limited inventory of cookie cutters. Ann Clark, the company, was born” (annclark.com).

From those humble beginnings, Ann Clark has grown into an internationally recognized brand. Today, their exceptional cookie cutters are cherished by bakers in countries across the globe. Each cutter remains a testament to American craftsmanship, still meticulously hand-made from tin-plated steel at their facility in Rutland, Vermont. With approximately 700 unique shapes actively in circulation, Ann Clark continues to inspire endless possibilities for creative cookie decorating.

My Spring Baking Adventure: Lilac-Scented Sugar Cookies

I was absolutely thrilled to receive a thoughtful package of baking essentials from Ann Clark, including some of their most beloved spring-themed cookie cutters. This collection instantly sparked my imagination, leading me to create the delightful treats pictured below.

For these beautiful cookies, I chose Ann Clark’s charming scalloped flower and elegant butterfly cookie cutters. To infuse a unique, seasonal flavor, I incorporated finely chopped lilac petals into Ann Clark’s classic sugar cookie recipe. The delicate floral notes elevated the traditional sweetness, creating an extraordinary taste experience. A final flourish of powdered freeze-dried berries added a pop of color and a delightful tart counterpoint. Baking these exquisite cookies was a dream, made even smoother by Ann Clark’s parchment paper baking sheets. These sheets, crafted in France using traditional, non-chemical methods, truly offer superb quality, ensuring even baking and effortless release every time.

The resulting cookies were nothing short of spectacular. The luscious, lilac-scented crumb melted in my mouth, creating a symphony of delicate floral sweetness. This perfectly balanced the vibrant tartness of the berries, resulting in a dessert “situation” that was utterly irresistible. Without a doubt, these were some of the most memorable and delicious cookies I have ever had the pleasure of baking and tasting, proving that quality tools and a touch of creativity can transform a simple recipe into a gourmet delight.

Beyond cookies, Ann Clark’s baking essentials proved invaluable for other sweet creations. I also utilized their reliable piping bags to elegantly decorate lilac cupcakes adorned with a luscious blueberry mascarpone frosting, as showcased in my previous post. The sturdy construction of these bags made them incredibly quick and easy to use, providing precise control for intricate designs. They are truly a wonderful baking ally, simplifying the decorating process and helping achieve professional-looking results with minimal effort.

An Exclusive Insight: Interview with Ben Clark, CEO of Ann Clark

To gain a deeper understanding of this remarkable company and its commitment to bakers, Ann Clark’s son and current CEO, Ben Clark, graciously provided an exclusive interview to Chicago Loves Panini. I am delighted to share his insights below, offering a glimpse into the past, present, and future of Ann Clark.

1. Ann Clark Ltd. boasts an extraordinary history rooted in creativity and entrepreneurship. Could you elaborate on the company’s journey and what inspired the initial focus on cookie cutters?

Ben’s response paints a vivid picture of Ann Clark’s genesis, highlighting the confluence of artistic passion and business acumen. “Ann Clark was started by my mom, Ann, and my father, John. They had moved to Vermont and were seeking a new venture that combined their entrepreneurial spirit with Ann’s artwork. They made a number of items based on a pig that she had painted–cutting boards, cookie cutters, etc., and attended a craft show. At the craft show, the cookie cutters far outsold the rest of the items, and Ann Clark Ltd. was born.” This foundational success revealed a clear market demand and paved the way for a specialized focus on cookie cutters.

Ben further explains the evolution under his leadership: “When I took over the company, one of my first initiatives was to bring production in-house. We acquired another cookie cutter manufacturing brand, and we built custom machines for making cookie cutters accurately and quickly. A cookie cutter made three years ago will look exactly the same as one made today. Once we brought production in-house, we were able to grow the business exponentially. We also began selling our products on Amazon, which opened the door to a worldwide market. We now sell our cookie cutters in 19 countries worldwide.” This strategic move to internalize production not only ensured unparalleled quality and consistency but also laid the groundwork for significant expansion and global reach, transforming Ann Clark into a powerhouse in the baking industry.

Beyond cookie cutters, Ann Clark has strategically diversified its product line. “In 2021, we decided to look beyond cookie cutters, creating a line of baking ingredients. We tested the market for a number of ingredients, and food coloring took off. We expanded our Rutland, Vermont manufacturing plant to include a food-safe facility, and began making food coloring, instant royal icing, and working on a recipe for fondant. More recently, we’ve expanded into even more ingredients–like meringue powder and espresso powder – plus baking mixes, like our gourmet cake and frosting mixes and the newest addition to our line, Country Cornbread.” This expansion underscores Ann Clark’s commitment to being a comprehensive resource for bakers, offering not just tools but also high-quality ingredients and convenient mixes to enhance the baking experience.

2. With a product catalog featuring close to 1,000 cookie cutters, what stands out as your best-selling cookie cutter of all time, and are any spring cookie cutters among your top performers?

Ann Clark’s vast selection is impressive, with approximately “700 in active circulation” at any given time. When it comes to their all-time bestseller, Ben reveals a surprising, yet incredibly versatile choice: “Our best-selling cookie cutter of all time is the Large Number One cookie cutter. It has a ton of uses – from birthdays to sporting events.” Its simple yet universally applicable design makes it a perennial favorite for countless celebration themes.

For seasonal spring shapes, a few classic designs consistently capture the hearts of bakers. Ben notes, “For spring shapes, the Mason Jar, Holy Cross, and Easter Bunny are all in the top 10 of all time.” These shapes resonate with the themes of renewal, celebration, and tradition that define the spring season, making them highly sought-after for Easter, baptisms, and general spring gatherings.

3. Are there specific cookie cutters that consistently sell well during the spring season, particularly around Mother’s Day?

Spring and Mother’s Day are prime times for gifting and celebration, and Ann Clark’s collection offers perfect shapes for these occasions. Ben confirms, “All of our flower shapes sell well during Mother’s Day and throughout the spring. Our scalloped-edge flower is a very popular shape, and there are so many ways to decorate it.” The elegant simplicity of a flower, especially one with a scalloped edge, provides an ideal canvas for creative icing and decoration, allowing bakers to personalize their heartfelt gifts.

Beyond traditional floral designs, other shapes gain significant traction. Ben adds, “The mason jar does well at this time–we see a lot of cookie “bouquets” given as gifts.” This innovative use of the Mason Jar cutter allows bakers to create stunning, edible arrangements that make for truly unique and memorable Mother’s Day presents. Additionally, nature-inspired themes are always a hit. “Birds, bees, and butterflies also are popular spring and Mother’s Day shapes,” reflecting the season’s renewal and the delicate beauty of the natural world.

There are hundreds of tutorials, recipes, and videos available to those seeking to learn.” This comprehensive online platform transforms Ann Clark into a true community hub for bakers worldwide, offering invaluable guidance and creative prompts.

Ann Clark’s international presence is already significant, and their global ambitions continue to grow. Ben confirms, “Our products are currently available in 19 countries through Amazon, and we have a number of wholesale partners in Canada.” This widespread availability makes their quality products accessible to a broad international audience.

Further demonstrating their commitment to global expansion, Ben notes, “We were awarded the STEP Grant by the Vermont Department of Economic Development, which has allowed us to continue expansion into key markets overseas.” This prestigious grant underscores the state’s recognition of Ann Clark’s export potential and its contribution to local economic growth. “Our export business also means more jobs here in Vermont, at our cookie cutter plant and food production facility,” Ben concludes, emphasizing the positive ripple effect of their international success on the local community and economy.
