There’s nothing quite like gathering loved ones around a table laden with delicious food. My husband and I cherish those moments, whether it’s hosting a casual brunch or a festive holiday meal at our Jersey shore home. We believe that good food fosters great conversation and lasting memories, which is why I’m always eager to whip up a feast for our overnight guests. Among the myriad of dishes we serve, breakfast always holds a special place in our hearts – and on our menu.

Over the years, our breakfast and brunch repertoire has grown to include many crowd-pleasers. Favorites like Blueberry French Toast Croissant Casserole, Easy Drop Scones, Crustless Spinach and Bacon Quiche Squares, and Great Aunt Rose’s Sour Cream Pound Cake have become staples. And recently, my Hash Brown Crust Quiche has quickly climbed the ranks to become one of the most requested dishes, proving itself to be an unforgettable addition to our culinary traditions.

Our kitchen table is a place where both savory and sweet dishes harmoniously coexist. While we might offer a delightful banana muffin or a wholesome granola cookie, this hearty and incredibly cheesy quiche is often the star. It masterfully combines all the essential breakfast ingredients – eggs, cheese, potatoes, and ham – into convenient, easy-to-eat slices that are bursting with flavor. The ingenious use of a hash brown crust not only makes this quiche naturally gluten-free but also adds a satisfying crunch and a rich, savory potato flavor that perfectly complements the creamy egg filling. It’s a breakfast experience that truly sets itself apart.

Why a Hash Brown Crust for Your Quiche?

The concept of a quiche typically involves a traditional pastry crust, which, while delicious, can be time-consuming to prepare and is not always suitable for those with gluten sensitivities. This hash brown crust quiche offers a brilliant alternative that is equally flavorful, much simpler to make, and inherently gluten-free. Using frozen hash browns streamlines the process, allowing you to achieve a wonderfully crispy and flavorful base without the hassle of rolling out dough.

This crust adds a fantastic textural contrast to the soft, custardy filling. The potatoes crisp up beautifully in the oven, creating a sturdy yet tender foundation that holds the generous filling perfectly. It’s a delightful surprise for anyone expecting a traditional crust and a game-changer for those seeking a gluten-free option that doesn’t compromise on taste or texture. Plus, who can resist the comforting taste of perfectly seasoned potatoes at breakfast?

Essential Ingredients for Your Perfect Quiche

Crafting this delightful hash brown quiche requires a simple list of readily available ingredients, ensuring that you can whip up this impressive dish with minimal fuss. Each component plays a crucial role in building the layers of flavor and texture that make this quiche so irresistible.

Crust Ingredients:

  • Frozen Cubed Hash Browns: The star of our crust! Cubed hash browns provide a fantastic texture, crisping up nicely to form a solid base. While shredded hash browns can also work, the cubed variety offers a more substantial, rustic feel.
  • Salted Butter: Essential for both greasing your pie plate and binding the hash browns, butter adds a rich, golden flavor and helps achieve that desirable crispy texture.
  • Olive Oil: A touch of olive oil complements the butter, helping the hash browns brown evenly and preventing sticking.
  • Kosher Salt & Pepper: Fundamental seasonings to bring out the natural flavor of the potatoes.
  • Garlic Powder: Adds a subtle aromatic depth to the hash brown crust, making it even more savory and appealing.

Filling Ingredients:

  • Large Eggs: The foundation of any quiche, providing that rich, custardy texture. Using fresh, large eggs ensures a creamy and satisfying filling.
  • Heavy Cream: This is what gives quiche its luxurious, smooth, and incredibly rich consistency. Don’t skimp on the cream for the best results!
  • Scallions (Green Onions): Finely sliced scallions add a fresh, mild oniony bite and a vibrant pop of color, cutting through the richness of the other ingredients.
  • Ham: Diced cooked ham contributes a wonderful smoky, savory flavor and a satisfying texture. It’s a classic pairing with eggs and cheese.
  • Cheddar Cheese: Shredded sharp cheddar cheese melts beautifully, infusing the quiche with its distinctive tangy and creamy notes. It’s a quintessential quiche ingredient.
  • Spicy Mustard: A secret ingredient for many quiches! A hint of spicy mustard (like Dijon) enhances the savory flavors of the filling and adds a subtle zing without overpowering the dish.

Are Frozen Hash Browns Gluten-Free? A Closer Look

One of the significant advantages of this recipe is its naturally gluten-free nature, thanks to the hash brown crust. However, it’s always prudent to be vigilant, especially if gluten is a serious dietary concern. While most plain frozen hash browns are indeed gluten-free, manufacturing processes can sometimes introduce cross-contamination or hidden gluten.

Always check the packaging for a clear “gluten-free” label from a certified source. Additionally, carefully scan the ingredients list for any wheat-containing additives, binders, or coatings that might be used to prevent potatoes from sticking together or to enhance browning. Brands and products vary, so a quick read of the label ensures peace of mind for you and your guests.

  1. Prepare the Hash Browns: In a large bowl, combine the frozen hash browns with melted butter, olive oil, kosher salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Ensure the potatoes are evenly coated for maximum flavor and crispiness.
  2. Parbake the Crust: Press the seasoned hash browns evenly into a greased pie plate, making sure to extend them up the sides to form a sturdy crust. Parbaking the crust is a crucial step that ensures it gets delightfully crispy before the wet filling is added, preventing a soggy bottom.
  3. Mix the Filling: While the crust bakes, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, thinly sliced scallions, diced ham, and shredded cheddar cheese. Season with the remaining salt and pepper, and a touch of spicy mustard for an extra layer of flavor.
  4. Compress the Crust: Once the hash brown crust is parbaked and slightly browned, remove it from the oven. Gently press down on the hash browns with a spatula. This simple step helps to compact the potatoes, filling any small gaps and creating an even firmer, more cohesive base for your quiche.
  5. Fill and Bake: Carefully pour the prepared egg mixture over the parbaked hash brown crust. Return the quiche to the oven and continue baking until the filling is perfectly set and golden brown on top. The eggs should be firm, indicating a perfect custardy texture within.
  6. Cool and Serve: Allow the quiche to cool for 5 to 10 minutes before slicing and serving. This resting period helps the quiche set completely, making for cleaner slices and preventing the filling from spilling out.

Expert Suggestions and Recipe Tips for Success

Achieving quiche perfection is easy with a few helpful tips and creative variations. Tailor this recipe to your tastes and dietary needs with these suggestions:

Optimize Your Hash Brown Choice: While the recipe calls for frozen cubed hash browns for their robust texture, feel free to experiment. Shredded hash browns will yield a finer, more uniformly crisp crust, while refrigerated hash browns can also be used. If using refrigerated options, you might need to slightly shorten the parbaking time as they contain less moisture. Always keep a close eye on the crust during the last 10 minutes of baking to prevent over-browning or burning.

Elevate Your Cheese Selection: Sharp cheddar is a classic for good reason, providing a delightful tang and excellent melting properties. However, don’t hesitate to customize! Consider using pepper jack for a spicy kick, Swiss for a nutty depth, Havarti for a buttery, mild flavor, or Colby for its gentle creaminess. A blend of cheeses can also add complexity.

Vary the Meat Options: Diced smoky ham is a timeless choice for quiche, offering a fantastic savory counterpoint. For alternative breakfast meats, try crispy cooked and crumbled bacon, savory diced Canadian bacon, or flavorful cooked and crumbled breakfast sausage. Each option brings its own unique character to the quiche, so feel free to mix and match or choose your favorite.

Incorporate Sautéed Vegetables: Boost the nutritional value and flavor profile of your quiche by stirring in up to ½ cup of finely diced, sautéed vegetables. Excellent additions include zucchini, yellow squash, sweet onions, colorful bell peppers, or earthy mushrooms. Sauté them first to remove excess moisture and intensify their flavors before adding them to the egg mixture. This prevents the quiche from becoming watery.

Serving and Storage Tips

This Hash Brown Crust Quiche is incredibly versatile, making it perfect for various occasions. Serve it warm, straight from the oven, or at room temperature. It pairs wonderfully with a fresh green salad for a light lunch, a bowl of fresh fruit for a vibrant breakfast, or alongside crispy bacon and toast for a hearty brunch spread.

Storing Leftovers: Any leftover quiche can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.

Reheating: To reheat, individual slices can be warmed in the microwave, or for best results, place them in a preheated oven (around 350°F / 175°C) or toaster oven until heated through and the crust regains some crispiness.

Freezing: This quiche freezes well! Once completely cooled, wrap the entire quiche or individual slices tightly in plastic wrap, then in aluminum foil. Freeze for up to 2-3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating in the oven.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups of cubed frozen hash browns
  • 3 tablespoons salted butter melted, plus more for greasing pie plate
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt divided
  • 1 teaspoon pepper divided
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • ¼ cup thinly sliced scallions
  • 1 cup cooked ham ¼ inch dice
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese packed
  • 1 teaspoon spicy mustard

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Grease a 9-inch pie plate with butter and set aside.
  • Place the frozen hash browns in a large bowl. Drizzle with the melted butter and olive oil. Toss to coat. Sprinkle with 1 teaspoon of kosher salt, ½ teaspoon pepper, and the garlic powder. Toss again to evenly coat the hash browns with the spices.
  • Evenly spread the seasoned hash browns in the prepared pie plate and press them firmly up the sides of the pan to form the crust. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the hash browns are lightly browned and crispy.
  • While the crust is baking, prepare the filling. In a bowl or 4-cup measuring cup, add the eggs and beat until combined and slightly frothy. Stir in the heavy cream, thinly sliced scallions, diced ham, shredded cheddar cheese, the remaining 1 teaspoon kosher salt, ½ teaspoon pepper, and spicy mustard. Mix until all ingredients are well incorporated.
  • Remove the parbaked crust from the oven. Gently press down on the hash browns with a spatula to fill in any small gaps in the crust. This ensures a solid base for your filling. It doesn’t need to be perfectly smooth, just compacted.
  • Carefully pour the egg mixture into the hash brown crust. Return the quiche to the oven and bake for an additional 25 to 30 minutes, or until the eggs are just set. A digital thermometer inserted into the center should read about 170 degrees F.
  • Remove the quiche from the oven. Let it cool for about 5 to 10 minutes before cutting into wedges and serving. This resting period allows the quiche to set properly for cleaner slices.

Notes

Use store-bought hash browns: Opting for packaged hash browns significantly speeds up the quiche preparation. While frozen cubed potatoes were used here for the crust, shredded hash browns also work beautifully. Refrigerated hash browns can be used too, but you might need to slightly shorten their parbaking time. Monitor the crust closely, especially in the last 10 minutes of baking, to prevent it from burning.

Change up the cheese: Sharp cheddar is a preferred choice for its robust flavor in quiche. However, you can easily substitute with other excellent options like pepper jack, Swiss, Havarti, or Colby cheeses to match your preference.

Change up the meat: Diced smoky ham is a classic quiche ingredient. For variations, consider cooked and crumbled bacon, diced Canadian bacon, or cooked and crumbled breakfast sausage.

Add sautéed vegetables: Enhance your quiche by stirring in up to ½ cup of finely diced and sautéed vegetables such as zucchini, yellow squash, onions, bell peppers, or mushrooms. Ensure they are sautéed beforehand to remove moisture and concentrate flavor.
