Beijo de Chocolat: Where Chocolate Kisses Meet Crêpe Dreams

Update: While Beijo de Chocolat, the subject of this review, has since closed its original location and the owners have relocated to Michigan, this article serves as a testament to the exceptional craftsmanship and memorable experience it once offered. It highlights the passion and artistry that defined this celebrated chocolatier, sharing a glimpse into its delectable legacy.

The evening was a quintessential Chicago blend of cold and rain, a perfect storm to test one’s resolve after a particularly demanding workday and a series of sleep-deprived nights. My initial inclination was to retreat home, to the comforting embrace of a warm blanket and a steaming mug of cocoa. Yet, an invitation from Beijo de Chocolat — a promise of “a night of chocolate and crêpes” — held an irresistible allure. The prospect of encountering truly unique and masterfully crafted chocolate flavors was a pull too strong to ignore. Driven by a desire to experience their renowned chocolate artistry firsthand, I decided to venture out, a decision I am profoundly grateful for having made.

Beijo de Chocolat, at its prime, stood as one of America’s premier chocolatiers, a reputation solidified by an impressive collection of accolades. In 2013 alone, they garnered an astonishing 22 medals across three categories at the prestigious International Chocolate Salon. This included coveted gold medals in the bridal, chocolate bar, and white chocolate categories – a clear indicator of their diverse expertise and commitment to excellence. Before my visit, I had delved into numerous online reviews, each echoing enthusiastic praise and confirming the establishment’s stellar standing among confectionery enthusiasts. Such a formidable reputation only amplified my anticipation to sample their sweet creations. Upon entering the charming shop, I was immediately enveloped in a warm and inviting atmosphere. I was graciously greeted by the owners, Laura and Krunch, whose genuine passion for their craft was palpable. They were eager to guide me through the extensive array of artisan chocolate options available for sampling, each one a miniature work of art. The sheer variety was astounding, promising an unforgettable tasting journey:

Curiosity naturally led me to inquire about the origins and meaning behind the name “Beijo de Chocolat.” Laura, with a delightful smile, was quick to illuminate me. She explained that “beijo” translates to “kiss” in Portuguese, rendering the shop’s name as “The Kiss of Chocolate.” This moniker perfectly encapsulates the intimate and indulgent experience offered by their exquisite confections. Furthermore, she revealed that the name also served as a heartfelt tribute to the beloved film *Chocolat*, starring Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp – a cinematic favorite of hers. The movie, with its enchanting narrative of chocolate’s transformative power and ability to bring joy and connection to a community, resonates deeply with the ethos of an artisan chocolatier dedicated to crafting moments of pure bliss.

Among Beijo de Chocolat’s most celebrated offerings were their Brazilian Brigadeiros. These delightful confections, often likened to chocolate truffles, possessed a distinctive charm and flavor profile. Each Brigadeiro featured a luxuriously smooth and creamy center, lovingly enveloped in either rich Belgian milk chocolate or decadent dark chocolate. The texture was impeccable – a delightful melt-in-your-mouth experience that spoke volumes of their craftsmanship. I sampled both the milk and dark chocolate varieties, finding both to be utterly captivating. The smooth consistency was consistent across both, and the deep, authentic chocolate flavor was undeniably satisfying, making them truly hard to resist and an instant highlight of the tasting experience.

Beyond the beloved Brigadeiros, my chocolate exploration continued with a selection of four additional unique varieties, each promising a distinct flavor adventure: the intriguing white chocolate lemon soufflé, the elegantly presented strawberry rose, the exotic tropicana, and the boldly flavored gingerlicious. This diverse array showcased the chocolatiers’ innovative spirit and their dedication to experimenting with a wide spectrum of tastes and textures, inviting customers on a truly global culinary journey through their artisan creations.

The white chocolate lemon soufflé proved to be a delightful surprise, crafted with a genuine infusion of fresh lemon juice that delivered a beautifully balanced flavor profile. It offered a zesty, pungent kick that was expertly mellowed by a subtle sweetness, resulting in a refreshing and thoroughly enjoyable treat. The strawberry rose was a true feast for both the eyes and the palate. Encased in rich dark Belgian chocolate, its smooth center was a testament to refined confectionery. What truly set it apart was its exterior, delicately dipped in edible rose petals, lending it an exquisitely pretty and romantic aesthetic. Its flavor was natural and nuanced, a gentle whisper of strawberry and rose that never overwhelmed the senses. Gingerlicious, a bold creation made from dark chocolate generously infused with freshly grated ginger, was a powerful experience. While I typically don’t gravitate towards strong ginger flavors, I could appreciate its robust character and the quality of its ingredients, undoubtedly a favorite for ginger aficionados seeking a distinctive spice. However, the undisputed star of my tasting, and my personal favorite, was the tropicana. This ingenious concoction was a masterful blend of apricot, peach, and mango, all harmoniously integrated into smooth white chocolate. Adorned with delicate, hand-painted yellow and orange swirls, it was as visually stunning as it was delicious. The various fruit flavors danced together beautifully, creating a symphony of refreshing and exotic notes that left a lasting, unique impression.

My invitation to Beijo de Chocolat promised “a night of chocolate and crêpes,” and having thoroughly explored their exquisite chocolates, it was time to assess their performance in the crêpe department. I opted for the “Le Monkey” crêpe, a tantalizing creation generously filled with thinly sliced banana, toasted coconut flakes, a dollop of fresh whipped cream, and a drizzle of rich chocolate sauce. From the very first bite, I knew it was a winner. The crêpe itself was a marvel – incredibly thin, light, and perfectly cooked, providing an ideal canvas for the vibrant fillings. The chocolate sauce was a pleasant background element, offering just enough richness without overwhelming the star ingredients. The fresh banana slices were sweet and tender, beautifully complemented by the playful crunch and exotic aroma of the coconut flakes. By this point in the evening, I was pleasantly full, so I requested to take a portion of the crêpe home. My husband, who famously isn’t a fan of chocolate (a true mystery to me!), sampled it and was genuinely impressed by its lightness and balanced flavors. This particular crêpe, with its generous fruit and whipped cream filling, proved to be a perfect choice, satisfying both my sweet tooth and his preference for a lighter, fruit-forward dessert.

Departing from Beijo de Chocolat, I carried with me not just the lingering taste of exceptional confections, but also a profound sense of gratitude for having met Laura and Krunch. They were more than just business owners; they were true artisans, deeply committed to the delicate art of crafting flavorsome and beautiful sweets that genuinely bring happiness to those who taste them. It was a privilege to hear their stories, to witness their unwavering passion, and to discover their unparalleled enthusiasm and belief in every single product they created. Their dedication illuminated the experience, transforming a simple dessert tasting into a journey through culinary artistry. In every vibrant city, hidden gems like Beijo de Chocolat are scattered – sometimes nestled in bustling neighborhoods, sometimes tucked away on quiet outskirts. These establishments, though occasionally out of plain sight, are never overlooked by passionate foodies and connoisseurs seeking authentic, handcrafted delights. They represent the heart of local gastronomy, offering unique experiences that elevate everyday moments. My culinary journey is an ongoing adventure, rich with discoveries and filled with the promise of uncovering many more such treasures. I am committed to exploring as many as possible, delving into the stories behind the food, and celebrating the artisans who dedicate their lives to creating memorable tastes. There is indeed so much more to do – and an endless array of exquisite flavors and passionate creators to discover.
