Discovering The Allis Bar: Chicago’s Hottest Culinary Destination in the West Loop
As summer lingered in Chicago, offering some of its most delightful weather, I decided to celebrate my birthday a little fashionably late by exploring the newly updated food and spritz bar menu at The Allis Bar. This wasn’t just any celebratory meal; The Allis Bar had recently earned a coveted spot on Chicago Magazine’s list of “ten hottest restaurants” of the moment, igniting my curiosity and setting high expectations for a truly memorable dining experience in the heart of the West Loop.
An Oasis in the West Loop: The Allis Bar Ambiance and Legacy
Nestled on the ground floor of the prestigious Soho House Chicago, The Allis Bar stands as a beacon of sophistication and style in the vibrant West Loop neighborhood. From the moment you step inside, you are enveloped in an atmosphere that is both grand and inviting. The interior design is a masterclass in understated elegance, featuring rich hues of dark wood that exude warmth and luxury, complemented by an expansive and thoughtfully curated art collection adorning the walls. This harmonious blend of classic charm and contemporary flair makes The Allis not only a culinary hotspot but also one of Chicago’s most “Instagrammable” places, offering an immersive space perfect for intimate conversations or lively social gatherings.
The establishment’s name, as proudly stated on their website, pays homage to the influential Allis family who commissioned the historic building in 1907. This connection to history adds another layer of depth to the dining experience, reminding patrons of the building’s storied past while they enjoy its modern amenities. Beyond the opulent interior, The Allis Bar also features charming bar and patio seating. While the space warmly welcomes the public, a special perk for Soho House and Friends members includes exclusive discounts and preferred reservation bookings, adding an element of exclusivity to its broad appeal. It’s a place where history meets modern gastronomy, creating a unique identity in Chicago’s competitive dining landscape.
Al Fresco Dining: A Perfect Summer Afternoon
Our visit perfectly coincided with the tail end of Chicago’s glorious summer, allowing us to indulge in a delightful lunch on the patio. The al fresco setting offered breathtaking views of the surrounding West Loop, a dynamic tapestry of urban life. We savored the gentle breeze rustling through the gracefully hanging plants, creating a serene backdrop to the bustling energy of the city below. The amazing end-of-summer weather was undoubtedly a major contributor to the overall enjoyment of our meal, enhancing every bite and sip.

A Spritz Bar & Culinary Journey: Diving into The Allis Menu
The Allis Bar’s new food and spritz bar menu is a testament to culinary innovation, focusing on seasonal flavors and fresh ingredients that truly shine. It promises a journey for the palate, blending traditional favorites with contemporary twists, all designed to be perfectly complemented by their selection of refreshing spritzes.
Delectable Starters: Kicking Off the Feast
Our culinary adventure began with a selection of exquisitely prepared appetizers that perfectly set the tone for the meal. The tender olives, marinated in-house, were a revelation – bursting with savory notes and a subtle brininess that tantalized the taste buds. They were served alongside a generous portion of freshly baked focaccia, which boasted an irresistible chewy-crispy crust and a soft, airy interior. This combination was simple yet incredibly satisfying, a testament to the quality of the ingredients and the skill in preparation.
Next, we indulged in the luscious milky burrata, a dish that epitomized freshness and flavor. The burrata, creamy and rich, was beautifully paired with vibrant cherry tomatoes, sweet basil leaves, and just the right touch of chili flakes. The chili flakes provided a delicate, piquant accent that elevated the entire dish, adding a subtle warmth without overpowering the inherent sweetness of the tomatoes or the dairy notes of the burrata. Each ingredient played its part in creating a symphony of textures and tastes, making it an ideal starter to complement a light spritz on a warm afternoon.

Crafted Cocktails: Artistry in a Glass
Our meal was beautifully punctuated by the most refreshing and visually stunning cocktails. Each drink was a masterpiece, effervescent and enchanting, perfectly capturing the spirit of a summer celebration. These were not just beverages but an integral part of the dining experience, crafted with precision and an eye for both flavor and aesthetic appeal.
Allis Purple Blossom cocktail, featuring Pea Flower Infused Cazadores, Blanco Tequila, St-Germain, Oolong Tea Syrup, Sparkling Brut
A particular standout was the “Purple Blossom” cocktail, a vibrant concoction that was as delightful to the eye as it was to the palate. This innovative drink featured Pea Flower Infused Cazadores Blanco Tequila, lending it its striking hue, harmoniously blended with St-Germain, Oolong Tea Syrup, and topped with Sparkling Brut. The result was a sophisticated, subtly floral, and delightfully bubbly creation that perfectly encapsulated the creativity of The Allis Bar’s mixologists. It’s clear that their beverage program is designed to complement their culinary offerings, creating a holistic and enjoyable sensory experience.
Main Course Marvels: Innovation on a Plate
For our main courses, we chose dishes that showcased the menu’s diversity and commitment to fresh, seasonal ingredients. The pita stuffed with cauliflower, mozzarella, and greens was an absolute triumph. The cauliflower, roasted to a perfect tender consistency, offered a pleasing textural contrast to the soft pita and melted mozzarella, while the greens added a fresh, earthy balance. What truly elevated this dish, however, was the accompanying spicy aioli. I genuinely wished I could have bottled that aioli and taken it home – its creamy, zesty, and subtly fiery kick was an unparalleled complement to the tender cauliflower and made every bite an unforgettable delight. It was a humble dish elevated to gourmet status through thoughtful preparation and an outstanding condiment.

Our second main course, the salmon with asparagus and tarragon pesto, was equally impressive. The salmon was cooked to flaky perfection, its rich flavor enhanced by the vibrant tarragon pesto. I’ve always found tarragon to be a “tricky” herb to work with; its distinct, anise-like flavor can easily overpower a dish if not used judiciously. However, at The Allis Bar, the tarragon pesto was fine-tuned with exquisite precision. It provided the perfect touch of herb-packed goodness, complementing the delicate fish without ever overwhelming it. The asparagus, cooked al dente, added a fresh, slightly bitter note that rounded out the dish beautifully. This main course was a testament to the chef’s understanding of ingredient balance and flavor harmony, transforming potentially strong flavors into a refined and delightful culinary experience.

Sweet Endings and Exceptional Service
One delightful discovery during our visit was learning that The Allis Bar prides itself on making all its breads and sweets in-house every morning. This commitment to fresh, artisanal baking was evident in every bite. All the breads we tried throughout our meal were simply fantastic, boasting superior texture and flavor that only freshly baked goods can offer.
Beyond the exceptional food, the service at The Allis Bar was truly outstanding. Our server, Cid, was attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in ensuring we had a wonderful experience. Noticing that we were in a bit of a hurry towards the end of our lunch, Cid thoughtfully recommended that we take some of their freshly baked cookies and coffee to-go. This small gesture made a significant impact, allowing us to continue our day without feeling rushed while still savoring the delightful offerings. I eagerly unwrapped one of the cookies in the car, and it was everything I hoped for: incredibly fresh, wonderfully chewy, and perfectly sweet – a truly satisfying end to an exquisite meal.
