Strategically positioned just south of the Zoo’s main grounds, with picturesque views overlooking the pond within the Nature Boardwalk at LPZ, The Patio at Café Brauer offers a unique oasis of peace and quiet amidst Chicago’s urban energy. It’s an ideal spot for families to unwind, enjoy a delicious meal, and immerse themselves in nature’s beauty.

The Café is easily accessible by car or bus. For a truly immersive experience of the meticulously restored prairie ecosystem, I suggest parking a short distance away and enjoying a leisurely walk to the Café. This allows you to fully appreciate the vibrant natural surroundings before settling down to eat.

From the striking, colorful vegetation to the diverse array of fish and birds, getting lost in nature’s embrace within an otherwise bustling city has never been more captivating. The Nature Boardwalk is a testament to conservation, showcasing a thriving ecosystem right in the heart of Chicago.

During our tour, we had the incredible opportunity to meet the Ape House’s newest addition – an adorable baby ape, whose proud mother seemed to revel in the attention she and her infant received. It was a heartwarming moment, witnessing the tender bond between them and the sheer wonder of new life.

It was equally fascinating to observe the other inhabitants of the Ape House, including the long-term resident, Umande, a majestic gorilla who appeared very keen to engage with his human guests. Such up-close encounters with these magnificent creatures provide a unique and educational experience, highlighting the zoo’s dedication to animal welfare and conservation.

Soaring Above the City: The 360 Chicago Observation Deck

For those who love to capture breathtaking photographs of Chicago’s world-famous skyline, a visit to the Observation Deck at 360 Chicago (located in the iconic John Hancock Building) is an absolute must. It’s also home to TILT, an exhilarating moving platform that literally tilts you out over Michigan Avenue from the 94th Floor, offering a thrilling and unique perspective of the cityscape below!

For a lively downtown experience where you can grab a quick, satisfying bite and a refreshing drink, I highly encourage you to visit Jake Melnick’s Corner Tap – if you haven’t already discovered this gem! Renowned among foodies and casual diners alike, Jake Melnick’s stands out for its legendary, boldly flavored chicken wings, captivating murals that adorn its interior, and a reliably excellent cocktail program. My friend Marina and I recently spent a fabulous afternoon on their vibrant patio, celebrating the arrival of summer with delicious food and great company.

Marina was particularly impressed by the locally brewed Off Color Myshka stout she tried at Jake Melnick’s, praising its rich flavor profile and smooth finish.

We both agreed that the food was not only delicious but also perfectly complemented the drinks on the menu. The BBQ pulled pork sliders were so irresistibly tender and flavorful that we found ourselves coming back for seconds (and even thirds!). It boasts a full-service bar and kitchen, multiple expansive terraces perfect for mingling, an exciting entertainment and gaming area, seven inviting fire pits for cooler evenings, and abundant social gathering spaces designed for both intimate conversations and grand celebrations.

The culinary direction at Offshore is expertly led by Executive Chef Michael Shrader, a celebrated chef who has garnered widespread acclaim for his work at establishments like The N9NE Group, Urban Union Chicago, and Monnie Burke’s. At Offshore, Chef Shrader’s philosophy centers on seasonal, modern American cuisine infused with global influences. His menu features an array of small, shareable plates, encouraging guests to explore a variety of inventive flavors together.

Complementing Chef Shrader’s exquisite dishes is Offshore’s meticulously developed beverage program, curated by Clay Livingston, formerly Partner and General Manager of Red Herring Lounge and Kitchen in Louisville. His program showcases a diverse selection of fine wines, champagnes, local craft beer options, and a playful yet sophisticated collection of house-made craft cocktails. Each drink is designed to refresh and delight, perfectly pairing with the stunning views and vibrant atmosphere.

I had the distinct pleasure of tasting Offshore’s culinary and beverage offerings at its recent official launch, and I can assure you that a visit this summer will be an absolute treat. From the delightfully crunchy chicken taquitos, served with zesty lime sour cream, fresh avocado, and a charred tomato salsa that adds a smoky depth…

…to the impeccably prepared spicy tuna roll, featuring clean, vibrant flavors, elegant presentation, and a delicious hint of wasabi that provides a subtle kick…

…and the crimson oyster shooters, which delighted and tantalized my tastebuds with their fresh brininess and intriguing spice…

…to the generously portioned fried Amish chicken sandwiches, brimming with house-made slaw and a feisty, hidden burst of hot sauce that adds an exciting dimension…

…and finally, the succulent prime burger, perfectly cooked and served with crispy bacon, creamy aioli, and a thick layer of melted white cheddar…

Every dish surpassed my expectations, demonstrating ambition, meticulous attention to detail, and a profound, humbling mastery of flavors. After such a magnificent feast, my friend Marina and I still managed to save room for dessert. She declared the macarons among the best she had ever tasted, praising their delicate texture and exquisite flavors.

So beautiful and perfectly crafted!

Meanwhile, I developed a particular weakness for Offshore’s delightful cake pops. While I didn’t spot them on their standard dessert menu, I sincerely hope these charming treats are either a seasonal offering or will soon be introduced, as they are truly exceptional.

After such a scrumptious dinner and much energy spent capturing countless pictures, I could finally unwind, cocktail in hand, and simply admire the stunning views as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in a breathtaking array of colors.

For an added layer of magic, I highly recommend visiting Offshore on Wednesdays at 9:30 PM or Saturdays at 10:30 PM. These times offer the perfect vantage point to witness Navy Pier’s spectacular fireworks display, an unforgettable spectacle that lights up the Chicago night sky.
