Unlocking Summer’s Secret: The Irresistible Charm of Sour Cherry Preserve and U-Pick Adventures
Imagine a symphony of flavors dancing on your palate: the vibrant sweetness, a tantalizing hint of bitterness, and deep, comforting caramel notes. This is not just a preserve; it’s an experience—layer upon layer of thick, rich flavor that is both sophisticated and profoundly pure. The moment you taste homemade sour cherry preserve, your mouth awakens to an explosion of complex summer tastes, forever transforming your culinary landscape. Having cherished and utilized sour cherries every summer since my childhood, I feel compelled to share their incredible versatility with everyone. Right now, I dream of bottling this exquisite sour cherry preserve in tiny jars and gifting it to the entire world. It truly is that exceptional—offering a depth and satisfaction that, in my humble opinion, surpasses even the most coveted jarred amarena cherries.
The Allure of Sour Cherries: A Seasonal Treasure
Sour cherries, often called tart cherries or pie cherries, are a jewel of the summer season, celebrated for their unique balance of sweet and tart. Unlike their sweeter cousins, sour cherries possess a distinctive tang that makes them perfect for baking, cooking, and, of course, preserving. This delightful tartness provides a complexity that elevates desserts and can even complement savory dishes. Beyond their remarkable flavor, sour cherries are also packed with antioxidants and boast anti-inflammatory properties, making them a delicious choice for health-conscious food lovers. Their season is incredibly fleeting, typically a small window from late June to early July, meaning you must seize the opportunity to enjoy them fresh before they spoil. This ephemeral nature only adds to their precious appeal, encouraging us to make the most of their brief annual appearance.
During my years in Europe, our summers were often filled with the joyful rituals of baking and canning with these magnificent fruits. It was a tradition that connected us to the seasons and the bounty of the land. Here in the Chicagoland area, finding fresh sour cherries can be a delightful treasure hunt. Specialized grocery stores like Fresh Farms International Market and Rich’s Fresh Market often carry them when in season. However, for those who truly wish to immerse themselves in the experience and appreciate the fruit even more, I wholeheartedly recommend the exhilarating adventure of picking them yourselves. It’s an activity that promises not only fresh produce but also unforgettable memories.
A Day at The Valley Orchard: Our Sour Cherry Picking Adventure
Our recent family outing perfectly illustrates this joy. We dedicated a beautiful Saturday morning to the delightful pursuit of cherry picking at The Valley Orchard, creating cherished moments that underscored the simple pleasures of summer.
Nestled approximately an hour’s scenic drive from the bustling heart of Chicago, The Valley Orchard is an expansive 35-acre family-owned farm, a true haven of natural abundance. This picturesque farm proudly showcases an impressive array of seasonal produce, ranging from vibrant vegetables and an assortment of berries to nearly 30 distinct apple varieties. It’s a place where the rhythm of nature dictates the day, and every visit offers something new to discover.
Upon our arrival, the air was fresh, and the farm buzzed with the gentle hum of summer. Though already past its peak, fresh rhubarb—a testament to the farm’s diverse offerings—had recently been ready for harvesting:

Life in the city can often sweep us into its relentless current, causing us to forget the profound beauty and tranquility that summer in the countryside so generously offers. Stepping onto the farm was a breath of fresh air, a gentle reminder of nature’s serene embrace:

And then, there they were—the coveted objects of our desire! Hanging in clusters, shimmering under the sun, these sour cherries were a magnificent sight. Each fruit, displaying a captivating ruby red transparency and a delicate, fragile appearance, was truly something to behold, promising rich flavors and endless culinary possibilities:

With an eagerness fueled by many recipes swirling in my mind and a desire to make the most of our limited time, I eagerly climbed onto a ladder thoughtfully provided by The Valley Orchard staff. Under the warm summer sun, I began the satisfying task of cherry picking, determined to fill our buckets with as much fruit as possible. The bounty was plentiful, and the satisfaction of harvesting each perfect cherry was immense.

I could have easily spent the entire day at The Valley Orchard, lost in the rhythm of picking. The cherry crop was exceptionally plentiful, and the weather was perfectly warm and pleasant, making for an ideal day outdoors. From my vantage point atop the ladder, the view of the orchard stretching out before me was simply magnificent, a panoramic tapestry of green and red under the clear blue sky.

Our little girl, with her infectious enthusiasm, was eager to contribute to our harvest. She diligently sorted through the freshly picked sour cherries, her small hands carefully sifting through the bounty, making sure not to miss a single precious fruit. It was a heartwarming sight, a true family effort in the embrace of nature.

Culinary Creations: From Orchard to Table
We arrived back home around lunchtime, invigorated by our morning’s adventure. A few hours later, I eagerly embarked on my first culinary creation with our freshly picked sour cherries: a classic French clafoutis. This elegant yet simple baked dessert, resembling a thick, custardy pancake, provides a perfect canvas for the tart fruit.

To craft this delectable clafoutis, I adhered to the timeless recipe by the legendary Julia Child, which you can find here. For baking, I employed my cherished Christineholm quiche dish, a lucky find from a second-hand store. This dish consistently bakes beautifully, always delivering flawless results without fail, a testament to its quality and charm:

The clafoutis was an absolute triumph, thanks in no small part to the magnificent sour cherries. Their characteristic bold sourness, often conspicuously absent in sweeter varieties like Bing cherries, provided a vital counterpoint to the rich custard. The resulting dessert was neither excessively sweet nor overtly savory, striking a perfect balance that captivated my husband—a notoriously picky eater who typically shies away from sugary dishes. The tartness of the cherries truly made this a sophisticated and satisfying treat.
Here it is: the embodiment of summer in a single, perfect bite! A warm, custardy embrace punctuated by bursts of tart cherry, it’s a dessert that speaks of sunshine and simple joys.

Beyond the clafoutis, I also dedicated some of our fresh sour cherries to creating a classic sponge cake, using one of my mom’s treasured old recipes. The addition of the tart cherries proved transformative, infusing the otherwise traditional sponge cake with much-needed moisture and a delightful assertiveness. This simple addition elevated the cake, rendering it wonderfully velvety in texture and absolutely chock-full of personality. It was a testament to how these humble fruits can completely redefine a familiar favorite.

Beyond Cherries: The Abundance of The Valley Orchard
While our focus was on sour cherries, I truly wished I could have spent even more time at The Valley Orchard, exploring and picking other delightful summer produce. For instance, these exquisite white currants, though now out of season, would have undoubtedly found their way into many delicious concoctions, perhaps a delicate jam or a refreshing tart:

While the cherries and some berries might have bid us farewell for now, the cycle of nature at The Valley Orchard means plenty more deliciousness is eagerly awaiting its turn. The first varieties of apples are anticipated to be perfectly ripe for picking around August 15th, marking the beginning of a bountiful autumn harvest. For apple enthusiasts like myself, my absolute favorite variety, the crisp and flavorful Braeburn, will be ready to pluck during the second week of October. It’s a fantastic reminder that the joys of farm-fresh produce extend far beyond the fleeting summer cherry season.

Embracing the Harvest and Looking Ahead
At this very moment, my pantry is a testament to the generosity of summer, safely storing quite a few jars of exquisite homemade sour cherry preserve (a big thank you to my wonderful MIL!). This delightful abundance means I am perfectly positioned to tackle other exciting crops and culinary adventures for the remainder of the year. Our family is already planning our return visits to The Valley Orchard—not just for the apples, but also for the sweet late raspberries, the hearty squash, the festive pumpkins, and an array of countless other seasonal treasures. I feel incredibly blessed to have such a wealth of choice and opportunity to connect with nature’s bounty—and who wouldn’t? It’s a profound joy to savor the flavors of each season, harvested directly from the source.
Here’s to a summer filled with delicious discoveries, cherished family moments, and the simple pleasure of good food!
