Discovering the Future of Confectionery: A Journey Through the Sweets & Snacks Expo
June proudly marks National Candy Month, a delightful occasion that beckons us to explore the vibrant and ever-evolving world of confections and snacks. What better way to immerse ourselves in this celebration than by attending the prestigious Sweets & Snacks Expo? This annual industry event, held in Chicago each May, is the ultimate gathering for over 16,000 professionals from the confectionery, cookie, and snack sectors. Spanning an impressive four acres of exhibition space, the Expo serves as a dynamic showcase for the latest innovations, groundbreaking products, and emerging trends that are set to redefine our palettes.
Whether you’re a product developer scouting for the next big hit, a discerning buyer seeking lucrative partnerships, or a passionate blogger eager to report on the freshest manufacturer offerings, the Sweets & Snacks Expo is undeniably the epicenter of sweet and savory innovation. It’s a place where creativity meets commerce, and where the future of indulgence takes tangible, delicious form.
For someone like me, blessed with an undeniable sweet tooth, attending this Expo was a highly anticipated event. But beyond the sheer joy of tasting new treats, I also approached the Expo with a specific academic lens. My recent research has focused on corporate social responsibility (CSR) within the food industry, and I was keen to observe how leading sweet and snack companies are addressing this complex but crucial issue. I wanted to see tangible efforts in improving worker conditions, mitigating environmental impact, and understanding what challenges still lie ahead. Blending serious business inquiry with the irresistible allure of candy and snacks promised a truly unique and fulfilling experience.
An Inspiring Start: Maria Sharapova and Sugarpova’s Sweet Mission
The day began on an incredibly high note for me and my friend Marina, a fellow blogger, who joined me at the Expo. Our excitement peaked when we had the unexpected pleasure of meeting tennis legend Maria Sharapova. She was present to promote Sugarpova, her premium line of candy bars, gummies, and gumballs. It might seem surprising for a world-class athlete to be a self-confessed candy lover, but Maria champions moderation and a balanced lifestyle. Her vision for Sugarpova was to offer consumers high-quality treats that could be enjoyed without guilt.
Beyond the delicious products, Sugarpova carries a profound social mission. A significant portion of the sales from these products directly benefits the Maria Sharapova Foundation. This foundation is dedicated to providing vital development opportunities to communities in Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus, all of which were profoundly affected by the devastating 1986 Chernobyl catastrophe. I recall being a small child when this nuclear disaster unfolded, and the vivid memories of my parents’ concern over its repercussions on the region, including weeks spent indoors and canceled seaside vacations, remain with me. Witnessing a company actively contributing to such a critical cause, addressing historical tragedies with forward-looking support, was truly heartwarming and a powerful testament to meaningful corporate social responsibility.

Embracing Wholesome Indulgence: The Rise of Organic and Non-GMO Snacks
One of the most prominent and pervasive trends at this year’s Expo, spanning both the sweet and savory categories, was the overwhelming emphasis on non-GMO, organic, and minimally processed ingredients. Consumers are increasingly scrutinizing food labels, demanding transparency and prioritizing healthier, more natural options. Manufacturers are responding with an impressive array of products that exemplify this movement towards “clean eating” and conscious consumption.
The sheer variety of offerings was staggering. I sampled everything from delectable organic gummy bears and fruit-flavored candy chews crafted with natural sweeteners to crisp apple chips that offered a satisfying crunch. The innovation extended to dark chocolate-covered quinoa, delightful quinoa clusters, and airy chocolate puffs, all designed to deliver flavor without compromise. Even breakfast cereals were reimagined as protein-packed powerhouses, catering to health-conscious individuals seeking functional benefits from their snacks.
Among my personal favorites were the organic vanilla snakaroons—small, chewy delights made from wholesome ingredients like coconut and almonds, subtly sweetened with agave nectar, and finished with a hint of vanilla extract and a touch of Himalayan pink salt. The dried mandarin oranges also left a lasting impression with their intense, natural sweetness and convenient form. This trend highlights a significant shift in consumer preferences, demonstrating that indulgence doesn’t have to come at the expense of well-being or ethical sourcing.

The Savory Spectrum: Reinventing Everyday Snacking
The trend towards innovation and cleaner ingredients was equally pronounced in the savory snack sector, where the options on display were both varied and remarkably sophisticated. The days of simple potato chips are giving way to a new era of gourmet snacking, focusing on unique textures, complex flavor profiles, and wholesome bases.
From exquisitely crafted gourmet jerky, offering protein-packed satisfaction, to innovative sprouted tortilla chips and crackers that prioritize digestibility and nutrient absorption, the choices were abundant. I discovered delightful organic pea snacks, a surprisingly addictive and nutritious alternative, and even handcrafted parsnip chips that transformed a humble root vegetable into a compelling snack. The emphasis was clearly on “clean” flavors—natural, distinct, and without artificial additives. This commitment to quality and diversity ensures that savory snack enthusiasts have an endless array of exciting and wholesome options to sample and savor.

A Beacon of Social Responsibility: The Sunshine Nut Company
Among the myriad of snack companies at the Expo, one particular enterprise profoundly captured my attention and left a lasting impression: The Sunshine Nut Company. Their booth, devoid of aggressive marketing or flashy colors, exuded a quiet dignity. Yet, the underlying philosophy and business model were nothing short of overwhelming and humbling. Founded by a former Hershey’s executive, this company was established with the noble purpose of creating poverty-lifting opportunities for underdeveloped communities and orphans in Mozambique.
The Sunshine Nut Company differentiates itself through a deeply ethical approach. It provides fair prices and stable employment opportunities directly to local cashew growers, fostering economic empowerment at the grassroots level. Crucially, unlike many companies that export raw materials for processing, Sunshine Nut operates its entire production line within Mozambique. This commitment to local processing adds significant value within the country, creating more jobs and retaining wealth. Their dedication extends further: an impressive 30% of the company’s net proceeds are reinvested into local agricultural development, empowering farmers with resources and training. Another 30% is allocated to caring for orphans and vulnerable children across Mozambique, addressing critical social needs. The final 30% supports the incubation of new food processing companies in various other regions of the country, fostering broader economic growth and self-sufficiency.
This holistic approach to business, making a long-lasting difference to individuals and communities, one cashew at a time, is truly inspiring. The Sunshine Nut Company stands as an excellent example of meaningful social responsibility, demonstrating how commerce can be a powerful force for profound positive change.

The “Small Format” Revolution: Indulgence in Moderation
In today’s fast-paced world, consumer demand for convenient, portion-controlled treats has skyrocketed. This has given rise to the “small format” revolution in sweets and snacks, where products are ingeniously packaged as “bites,” “barks,” “thins,” or “minis.” This trend caters perfectly to individuals seeking easy-to-snack options for on-the-go consumption or those who simply prefer to indulge in moderation without compromising on taste or quality.
Manufacturers have responded with remarkable creativity, offering a diverse range of products that fit this niche. I sampled an impressive selection of these new “small format” offerings at the Expo, from miniature chocolate bars to bite-sized cookies and thin crispbreads with various toppings. These innovations not only address evolving lifestyle needs but also empower consumers to make mindful choices about their snacking habits. The ability to enjoy a satisfying treat without overindulging is a powerful draw, making these smaller portions incredibly popular.

Timeless Pairings: The Enduring Appeal of Chocolate-Covered Creations
Chocolate-covered fruits and nuts continue to be a significant and beloved confectionery trend. While the core concept is timeless, 2016 also saw the introduction of a fresh range of innovative products within this category, pushing the boundaries of classic combinations. From exotic fruit and chocolate pairings to spiced nuts enrobed in gourmet cocoa, the creativity was evident.
Call me a traditionalist, but out of all the inventive fruit, nut, and chocolate combinations I sampled, my heart remained captivated by the classic elegance of chocolate-covered bananas. While one might argue there’s nothing inherently “new” or “sky-shattering” about this pairing, the exceptional quality of the ingredients used made the flavor combination nothing short of amazing. The rich, smooth chocolate perfectly complemented the sweet, creamy banana, creating a truly harmonious and indulgent experience. Mmmmmm… some classics truly never go out of style.
Speaking of chocolate-covered nuts, the Expo offered a delightful opportunity to rediscover an old “guilty pleasure” from my European past: Baci Perugina chocolates. During our dating days, my husband would often bring me these tiny, exquisite bites of chocolate and hazelnut heaven straight from Italy. I always cherished not just their delicious taste but also the uplifting messages tucked inside each wrapper. At the Expo, I had the unique chance to converse with a Baci master chocolatier and witness firsthand the intricate process of how these iconic chocolates are crafted, deepening my appreciation for their artistry.

The Art of Premium Chocolate: A Growing Indulgence
The past three years have seen a considerable surge in the sales of premium chocolate, signaling a growing consumer appetite for luxury and gourmet chocolate products, particularly those with a high cocoa content. This trend reflects a sophisticated palate that values nuanced flavors, superior ingredients, and often, ethical sourcing. Consumers are increasingly viewing chocolate not just as a treat, but as an experience, an indulgence, and even an art form.
At this year’s Sweets & Snacks Expo, I witnessed and sampled an extraordinary variety of chocolates and chocolate-covered caramels that perfectly aligned with this ongoing trend. From single-origin dark chocolates with intricate flavor notes to exquisitely crafted truffles and artisanal chocolate bars infused with exotic spices or fruits, the offerings were designed to delight the most discerning connoisseur. Indeed, the presentation and complexity of these premium chocolates truly elevated them to an art form, showcasing the dedication and passion of their creators.

Tcho Chocolate: Crafting Responsible Delights with Heart
Among the many chocolate companies at this year’s Expo, Tcho distinguished itself as an exceptional leader in corporate social responsibility. My search for manufacturers excelling in this critical area led me directly to Tcho, and they surpassed all my expectations. Tcho’s commitment to ethical practices is multi-faceted and deeply ingrained in their business model.
Tcho is a proud supporter of Fairtrade principles, ensuring that cocoa farmers receive equitable compensation for their hard work. Furthermore, they engage in direct partnerships with cocoa growers in regions like Peru, Ecuador, Ghana, and Madagascar. These partnerships extend beyond fair pricing; Tcho actively provides vital know-how and training to farmers, empowering them to significantly improve their cocoa cultivation and bean drying techniques. This direct involvement not only enhances the quality of the cocoa but also fosters economic stability for the farming communities.
Perhaps most innovatively, farmers are invited to participate in specially designed “flavor labs” by Tcho. Here, they have a direct input in the flavor development process, connecting them intimately to the final product and valuing their expertise. All these initiatives collectively foster sustainable and long-lasting community development, promising a brighter and more secure future for the cocoa bean growers and their families. This level of dedication to the entire supply chain, from bean to bar, is truly commendable.
I found the Tcho vision to be incredibly inspirational, and their chocolate was, quite simply, delicious. The Mokaccino variety, with its perfect blend of coffee and chocolate notes, quickly became my favorite. If I were to characterize Tcho chocolate in just a few words, I would call it “responsible chocolate: a chocolate with a heart.” At the conclusion of our engaging meeting, the Tcho team generously extended an invitation for me to tour their factory. It’s a shame they are based in California, otherwise, I would have happily obliged!

Sweet Discoveries and Lasting Impressions
My time at the Sweets & Snacks Expo was an unforgettable experience. I rediscovered beloved classics, forged new connections with industry professionals, and gained invaluable insights into the dynamic landscape of the confectionery and snack industry. The Expo proved to be exceptionally informative, introducing me to a multitude of innovative brands and products I hadn’t known existed. This deep dive into the industry ultimately transformed me into a more informed and conscious consumer, equipped with a greater understanding of how my choices impact the market.
Equally important, the Expo provided clear evidence that Willy Wonka’s fantastical chocolate factory is not merely a figment of someone’s imagination. Indeed, I can confidently say that “Candy Heaven” truly does exist, and it flourishes with innovation, flavor, and an increasing commitment to social responsibility. The future of treats looks incredibly promising, blending indulgence with purpose.
